Mirel™ is a new family of biobased and biodegradable polymers that is produced via the fermentation of sugar. The polymer is produced as pellets, similar to existing polymers on the market today and can be processed on existing, commercial converting equipment.
Mirel combines the performance of highly engineered thermoplastics with biodegradability. Mirel is biodegradable in a wide variety of environments including soil, home and industrial compost systems, salt water and fresh water lakes, rivers and streams. Mirel resins have received the European conformity certification of the OK Biodegradable Soil for natural soil biodegradability and the OK Biodegradable Water for natural fresh water biodegradability from Vinçotte.

Telles™, a 50/50 joint venture between Metabolix, an innovative bioscience company, and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), a global agribusiness, to commercialize Mirel™ bioplastics worldwide. Global applications will be sourced from a new 110 million pound (50,000 metric ton) production plant located in Clinton, Iowa.
