May 7, 2008 - Environmentalists had urged aldermen to take the bold step of imposing a tax of “10 cents or more” on plastic bags. A similar increase has been credited with reducing plastic bag usage by 94 percent in the Republic of Ireland. Plastic bags cost 2 cents apiece, compared to up to 6 cents for paper and as much as 14 cents for compostible plastic bags.
