Council asked to tax or ban plastic bags

July 9, 2008 - China made it illegal for stores to give out free plastic bags earlier this year. In Ireland, shoppers have to pay 22 euro cents for every plastic bag they get at the checkout counter. Mayor Sam Jones said he had not given plastic bag legislation any serious thought.
